Sui Sui
— a sake bar in Berlin
designed for change
How do you design a space when the program is still in flux? In Berlin’s Wedding district, a compact sake bar named Sui Sui answers this question with a quietly confident spatial system – one that balances adaptability and identity in equal measure.
Commissioned by two certified sake sommeliers with a clear vision but an open trajectory, the space was intended to function as a bar, a retail setting, and a place for tastings and workshops. The interior needed to accommodate all of these without prescribing a dominant narrative.
A custom-built counter organizes the room and acts as an anchor for interaction. The remaining elements – shelving, sideboards, refrigeration – orbit around this core. Multiplex plywood was chosen for its structural honesty and textural depth, finished in a way that keeps the grain visible. A single accent colour threads through the furniture: most notably in a laminated rhythm of colour edges on the counter’s slatted front, creating a kinetic visual effect.
Walls are treated in Silk Grey, softening the raw texture of the unfinished concrete. Black fixtures give the space definition and contrast. Technical installations like refrigerated units and glass polishers remain visible by design, reinforcing a functional aesthetic that aligns with the space’s pragmatic ethos.
Sui Sui does not claim to be a finished concept – rather, it holds space for what may come, without losing its sense of clarity.
